Best Snoring Remedies

Dr. Michael Friedman and his partners at the Advanced Center for Speciality Care offer many snoring treatments in their Chicago offices. There are several nonsurgical and surgical therapies that can be used to treat both snoring and sleep apnea.

Some of the best snoring remedies do not require surgery. These include Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), oral devices, and lifestyle changes.  Weight loss can reduce snoring and sleep apnea in people who are overweight, especially people who have excess fat around the neck. Avoiding alcohol, sedatives and sleeping on one’s side can also decrease symptom severity. CPAP uses a face mask connected by a flexible tube to a machine that delivers pressurized room air through the nose and/or mouth to splint the airways open. While many people do not like wearing a facial mask to sleep, CPAP for sleep apnea treatment can be very effective and many people grow accustomed to using the device each night. Oral devices are removable mouthpieces that work by either holding the jaw in a forward position (mandibular advancement) or preventing the tongue from falling backwards into the airway during sleep. An oral device can be custom fitted by Dr. Friedman at his snoring treatment center in Chicago in just one visit. The benefits of an oral device or CPAP for sleep apnea may be noticed the first night of use!

When non-surgical therapy does not relieve snoring or cure sleep apnea, surgical intervention is the next step. A few of the best snoring remedies are minimally invasive and some can be done right in the doctor’s office. Minimally invasive techniques are also very effective for mild sleep apnea and may be used in combination with other procedures in sleep apnea that is more severe. Examples of some minimally invasive surgeries for snoring and sleep apnea include palatal implant placement with the Pillar Implant System (mesh rods inserted into the soft palate to stiffen the palate), radiofrequency reduction of the tongue base (using a needle emitting radiofrequency to scar and shrink the thickest part of the tongue at the back of the mouth), and reduction of the nasal turbinates (decreases bulkiness of the mucosal tissue inside the nose that functions to warm and moisten inhaled air).

In addition, there are many surgical operations available to treat persistent or severe sleep apnea. Following sleep apnea diagnosis with a sleep study at a Sleep Diagnostic Center in Illinois (There are many convenient locations in luxurious hotels throughout Chicago and the suburbs that provide a comfortable, private, and relaxed environment for testing. Home testing is also available.), Dr. Michael Friedman can discuss some of the best snoring remedies to design a treatment plan to meet the patient’s needs. Dr. Michael Friedman has been involved in the development and testing of many of these treatments and is an expert in the field of sleep apnea.
