Delayed Phase Sleep Syndrome

Delayed phase sleep syndrome is a chronic disorder of sleep. It can be classified as a circadian rhythm disorder. Circadian rhythm is the body’s natural biological “clock,” controlling everything from sleepiness, alertness, and appetite to the secretion of hormones. In delayed phase sleep syndrome, the clock functions normally, but could be analogized to being in a different time zone.

People with delayed phase sleep syndrome tend to fall asleep hours past midnight and will sleep into the late morning or early afternoon. If they are allowed to sleep, they will sleep soundly, awake feeling refreshed and will not become tired again until past midnight the following night. The disability occurs in the fact that modern society operates on a different time schedule. Most schooldays and workdays begin in the morning; a time when a person with delayed phase sleep syndrome would normally be sleeping.

People with this chronic disorder are unable to adjust to an earlier schedule. No matter what time they get into bed, they will not fall asleep until early morning hours. If a person is able to readjust their sleep and wake schedules using an alarm clock and a little determination, they do not have delayed phase sleep syndrome.

If you are experiencing these symptoms, schedule and appointment a physician at a sleep disorder center in Chicago such as the Advanced Center for Specialty Care. Dr. Michael Friedman, an Otolaryngologist (Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor) who has specialty training in sleep medicine, can review your symptoms and medical history. Following a physical exam, he may recommend sleep testing at a sleep testing lab in Chicago .

A polysomnogram or sleep study uses a computerized recording of your brain and cardiovascular activity to asses your sleep patterns. Traditionally, sleep studies were performed in hospital or storefront sleep “labs.” It is often very difficult to sleep comfortably in these situations. Sleep Diagnostics, a sleep testing lab in Chicago now offers a more comfortable, natural environment. Sleep Diagnostics has based their testing sites in luxurious hotel suites. Checking into a comfortable hotel creates a secure, relaxed atmosphere essential for a good nights sleep. As part of the study, you are entitled to enjoy the hotel facilities. The rooms are designed so that data collection goes through a computer port directly to the technician’s suite. Crown Plazas in Chicago and throughout the suburbs make the testing easy to arrange and convenient.

There are some treatment options available for delayed phase sleep syndrome. After evaluation at a sleep testing lab in Chicago, your physician can go over therapy options.
