Diagnosis of Child Sleep Disorder

Proper diagnosis of pediatric sleep disorders is important to ensure proper treatment is utilized. Pediatric medicine is often not the same as adult medicine, and the same thing goes for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. There are physicians who specialize in the treatment of pediatric sleep disorders and a sleep diagnostic center experienced in treating children can be used as part of the diagnostic workup.

The first step in diagnosis is a visit to a physician. This may be the child’s primary care physician or an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctor) who is trained in sleep medicine. The physician will take a complete medical history, going over the child’s current symptoms, their previous and current medical conditions, any prior operations, allergies, and any current medications. It will also be important to discuss any behavioral or developmental problems exhibited by the child as well as the child’s sleeping habits and patterns. Following this discussion, the doctor will review the child’s height and weight measurements and examine the child, including the inside of the mouth and nose to look for airway obstruction that may facilitate Insomnia Treatment, and. This visit will allow the doctor to get an idea of the child’s risk for sleep apnea and the impact on quality of life and daily activities.

The diagnosis for sleep apnea is made by an overnight sleep study called a polysomnogram. This test is done by a Sleep Diagnostic Center. Sleep Diagnostics has based their testing sites in luxurious hotel suites in order to create a secure, relaxed environment to facilitate natural sleep. This test is done while the child sleeps, pediatric testing is very similar to adult testing. Monitors are used to measure many parameters, including breathing patterns, blood oxygen levels, brain activity, and heart activity. No needles are used in the testing process. Most monitors are connected to the body by small stickers. Although several monitors are used, most children are able to fall asleep without difficulty during the testing process. The private, hotel room suites are designed so that data collection goes through a computer port directly to the technician’s suite.

In a follow-up visit to the physician, the results of the history, physical exam and sleep study from the sleep diagnostic center will be reviewed and a diagnosis will be made. If the child is diagnosed with sleep apnea, there are many treatment options available to be discussed with the doctor.
