What should I expect when going for a sleep study?
If your doctor has determined that you need a sleep study (Polysomnogram), a sleep center in Chicago will conduct the test. A polysomnogram is a sleep apnea test ; it will monitor your breathing along with several other measurements during a full nights sleep and determine if a sleep disorder is present. Traditionally, sleep studies were performed in hospital or storefront sleep “labs.” It is often very difficult to sleep comfortably in these situations. Sleep Diagnostics centers have based their testing sites in luxurious hotel suites. Checking into a comfortable hotel creates a secure relaxed atmosphere essential for a good nights sleep. Sleep Diagnostics center also can provide home testing.
There are several types of sleep studies. The diagnostic overnight polysomnogram is the most common sleep apnea test and involves spending one night at the Sleep center in Chicago. If sleep apnea is discovered, you may need to spend a second night (does not need to be the following night) at the sleep center for CPAP titration. Another type of test is the multiple sleep latency test, which is done to diagnose narcolepsy or measure the amount of daytime sleepiness. This test is done in the morning following the polysomnogram.
On the day of the sleep apnea test , caffeine, alcohol, and any sedative medications should be avoided, as these will alter your sleep patterns. You should pack a bag with pajamas, toothbrush and other toiletries, and the clothes you will need for the next morning. You may also wish to bring your own pillow to increase your comfort level.
Sleep apnea testing in Chicago is done at one of the many Chicago Sleep Center locations. When you arrive, you will be escorted to your private room. After putting on your pajamas, you will be attached to several monitors, usually by means of sticky pads on the skin. Bands will be attached around your abdomen and chest to measure movement during breathing. A sensor will be placed on your finger to measure the oxygen in your blood. Stickers may be placed on your chest and head to measure heart and brain activity. It may seem like a lot of monitors, but none should cause pain or interfere with sleep! After this, you are allowed to relax, read or watch TV for a few minutes before going to sleep.
In the morning, the monitors are detached and you are free to shower, get dressed, and be on your way. The results of the test will be sent to your doctor.
Sleep Diagnostic centers in Chicago offer sleep apnea test administration both at your home or at a number of hotels in the Chicago area. If you choose to have your sleep study at home, monitors will be brought to your home and a sleep center technician will arrive to help set up and attach the monitors.
