How do I know if I have sleep apnea?
Many people are unaware that they have sleep apnea. Most often, people do not realize there may be a problem until they are told they snore loudly or stop breathing during the night. Although there may be clues to whether you have sleep apnea in your symptoms, a diagnosis is can only be made after visiting a sleep specialist and sleep testing clinic .
Sleep apnea is the cessation of breathing for approximately 10-30 seconds multiple times throughout the night. In severe sleep apnea, breathing may stop hundreds of times throughout the night. The fall in oxygen levels associated with breath cessation causes an arousal. Often, there is gasping, chocking, or coughing as breathing restarts. These arousals may or may not be remembered in the morning.
Most symptoms of sleep apnea are due to unrestorative sleep. Frequent arousals not only decrease the total amount of time spent sleeping. Arousals also inhibit a person from reaching periods of deep sleep, when the most restorative sleep occurs. If you do not feel refreshed in the morning or experience morning headaches, you may be experiencing chronic sleep deprivation due to sleep apnea.
Chronic sleep deprivation can cause daytime sleepiness and irritability. Forgetfulness, memory loss, and even depression may occur. If you find yourself falling asleep nearly every time you sit down (such as when watching television or at meetings with friends or family), at work, while driving or while talking, sleep apnea may be the cause. People with sleep apnea often do not have the energy to enjoy activities they used to such as time with friends or family, sports, etc.
If you are experiencing sleep apnea symptoms in Chicago, turn to a sleep disorder clinic. At the Advanced Center for Specialty Care, a physician trained in sleep medicine can determine whether sleep apnea is the correct diagnosis. The physician can go over your symptoms, medical history and examine your airway to determine your risk of sleep apnea. A Sleep diagnostics clinic in Chicago, located at luxury hotels, will perform an overnight polysomnogram (sleep study). Sleep diagnostics will measure your breathing along with other indicators while you sleep to determine whether you have sleep apnea or not. The Sleep Diagnostics Center hotel sleep testing clinics create a relaxed, comfortable environment for natural sleep. As part of the study, you are also entitled to enjoy the hotel facilities. The rooms are designed so that data collection goes through a computer port directly to the technician’s suite. Sleep Diagnostics Center has several sleep testing clinics in hotels throughout Chicago and the suburbs and can also provide home testing, allowing a comfortable environment for the sleep test administration.
