Sleep Apnea Diagnostic Center

If you are bothered by snoring or concerned that you may have sleep apnea, make an appointment with a certified sleep specialist in Chicago. Obstructive sleep apnea is a disorder of breathing during sleep in which a person stops breathing multiple times each night. A Chicago OSA diagnostic center such as the Advanced Center for Specialty Care has physicians who are trained in sleep medicine and sleep surgery. Part of the diagnostic work-up is a review of your medical history and symptoms along with a physical exam. While this can give the doctor an idea of your risk for sleep apnea, a diagnosis cannot be made until a sleep study (polysomnogram) is performed. This test can be done at Sleep Diagnostics, a Chicago sleep center.

A polysomnogram or sleep study uses a computerized recording of your brain and cardiovascuaascular activity to asses your sleep patterns. Traditionally, sleep studies were performed in hospital or storefront sleep “labs.” It is often very difficult to sleep comfortably in these situations. In order to create an environment to allow for comfortable, natural sleep, Sleep Diagnostics has based their testing sites in luxurious hotel suites. Checking into a comfortable hotel creates a secure, relaxed atmosphere essential for a good nights sleep. As part of the study, you are entitled to enjoy the hotel facilities. The rooms are designed so that data collection goes through a computer port directly to the technician’s suite. Crown Plazas in Chicago and throughout the suburbs make the testing easy to arrange and convenient.

If this test shows evidence of sleep apnea, you may be scheduled for a second sleep study at the same Chicago sleep center. During this study, the personnel at the Chicago Sleep laboratory will fit you with a CPAP machine. CPAP is a respirator type device that uses pressurized air delivered through a nose or face mask to keep the airways open. The Chicago sleep center will adjust the settings on this device while you sleep to make it effective and comfortable.

Following this testing at a Chicago sleep center, you will return to the physician’s office to discuss the diagnosis and options for treatment. While CPAP is effective, many people do not want to use it. If this is the case, there are many additional treatment options available. Dr. Michael Friedman, an Otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat doctor) and an expert in sleep medicine and surgery can discuss the options with you and create a treatment plan that is best suited to your needs.
