Types of Sleep Disorders
There are many types of sleeping disorders ranging from insomnia to narcolepsy. Because the body needs restorative sleep each night to maintain daytime alertness, sleep disorders can have a dramatic impact on quality of life. Otolaryngologists (ear, nose and throat surgeons) trained in sleep medicine, as are the doctors at the advanced center for specialty care, are able to diagnose a sleeping disorderand provide treatments.
Insomnia is a complaint of not sleeping a sufficient amount to feel rested the following day. Insomnia can have many causes including anxiety sleeping disorder, snoring, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and many other factors that may disturb the amount or quality of sleep received.
Anxiety sleep disorder occurs when excess anxiety prevents the relaxation that is necessary to fall and stay asleep. A person may be anxious about problems in their life, a long “to do” list necessary to complete, or worry over whether enough sleep will obtained.
Restless legs syndrome is a feeling of discomfort in the legs that is removed by moving or stimulating the legs. Therefore, it is uncomfortable to lye still in bed.
Snoring and sleep apnea are common sleeping disorders in the American population. Snoring is the generation of noise when sleeping due to partial airway obstruction by tissues in the nose, mouth or throat. Apneas occur when the airway becomes completely occluded and breathing ceases for approximately 10-30 seconds before the person wakes up and re-starts breathing. Sleep apnea, a type of sleep disorder breathing, is a condition where up to 100s of apneas occur each night. This greatly decreases not only the total amount of sleep but the amount of deep, restorative sleep as well.
There are many other sleeping disorders that can lead to chronic sleep deprivation and daytime sleepiness such as sleep walking, sleep terrors. At the opposite end of the spectrum is a narcolepsy disorder. In this disorder, a person falls suddenly into a deep sleep multiple times throughout the day, even when engaged in activities. This disorder can potentially be very dangerous, as a person may fall asleep while driving, operating machinery, or other hazardous activities.
